Description:
Armenia in 257 AD. At that time, persecution of Christians continued in the region. At that time, Poliuto, a government official, secretly converted to Christianity, a "forbidden religion," and chose the path of martyrdom. Poliuto was modeled on the real-life saint Polyutus, and when Donizetti (17979-1848) tried to perform his opera, the Neapolitan censors apparently took issue with this and eventually banned him from performing. Donizetti therefore left Italy and moved his base to Paris, where he revised the libretto into French and changed the title to "Martyr" in order to perform the work. Finally, he was able to stage the work. However, the work itself has since fallen out of favor, and is rarely performed. The first performance at Glyndebourne this time was realized by a splendid ensemble led by the famous tenor Fabiano and three other young singers. This is a charming stage full of Donizetti's graceful melodies in a modern production. Naxos Japan
